Unit 4. Staying at a hotel


Exercise 1. Прочтите в грамматическом справочнике информацию о степенях сравнения прилагательных и наречий §9, выучите слова и выражения с различными степенями сравнения и используйте их в собственных предложениях:

1. to make a quick reservation - сделать быстрый заказ в гостинице

2. to book the cheapest room - заказать самую дешевую комнату

3. to have the most expensive double/single room - взять самую дорогую комнату на двоих/одного

4. to have a nice room with twin beds - взять хорошую комнату с двумя кроватями

5. to be well equipped - быть хорошо оборудованным

6. the cheaper ... the better - чем дешевле, тем лучше

7. the most remarkable service - наиболее прекрасное обслуживание

8. the best swimming -pool and fitness centre - наилучший плавательный бассейн и фитнес центр.

9. to be easier to use - быть более удобным в использовании

10. to be much more comfortable - быть гораздо более комфортабельным

11. to be not the best/worst - быть не самым лучшим / не самым худшим

Exercise 2. Повторите по грамматическому справочнику информацию о степенях сравнения прилагательных и наречий §9 и переведите предложения на русский язык.

1. I would like to stay in the world-famous 5 star-hotel "Hilton".

2. It is one of the most remarkable hotels in the world.

3. It is possible to make a quick reservation in a hotel by phone or by e-mail.

4. The more stars there are next to the name of the hotel, the better the service is going to be.

5. You can enjoy the best swimming-pool and fitness centre.

6. The rooms in this hotel are much more comfortable than in any other hotel.

7. If you don't have much money, you may stay in any other hotel, which is not the best and is not the worst.

8. The rooms in such hotel are cheaper, but for you - the cheaper- the better, as you can save much money.

9. Any 5 star-hotel is well-equipped with telephones, computers, faxes and e-mail.

Exercise 3. Прочтите в грамматическом справочнике информацию о способах передачи будущего действия §10 и расскажите о предполагаемом путешествии и пребывании в отеле, используя вопросы:

1. Where will you go in summer?

2. What hotel will you choose, if you have much money?

3. What room will you choose, if you travel with your family?

4. What services would you like to have at a hotel?

5. How long are you going to stay at a hotel?

6. Would you like to have a quiet room with the view or a noisy room facing the street?

7. Would you like to reserve a room over the phone or personally?

8. Would you like to pay for your stay cash or by credit card?

9. Are you going to tip your maid or waiter for a good service?

Exercise 4. Повторите в грамматическом справочнике информацию об образовании простого прошедшего времени §8 и расскажите об отеле в прошедшем времени.

MWellington hotel is one of the best hotels in New York City. It provides courteous, warm, personal service. It is located close to the most prestigious addresses in New York City. It has been designed to meet the requirements of any traveler. The lobby of the hotel has a gift shop. The hotel staff can arrange sightseeing tours, airport transportation and taxi service. A coffee shop and a restaurant can be found not only in the lobby. They cook for their quests the most delicious food to any taste. If you are fond of national cuisine you may go to any restaurant not far from the hotel, as it is located close to the most magnificent restaurants, nightspots and cultural centers in New York.

Dialogue 1.
A: Good morning! I'd like to check in.
B: Do you have a reservation in our hotel?
A: Yes, certainly. I made a reservation 3 days ago by phone.
B: Could you tell me your name, please?
A: My name is Bill Smith. A reservation for a single room for 3 days.
B: Just a moment, sir. Here is your reservation. The charge is 100 dollars a night.
A: What does the charge include?
B: The charge includes breakfast and the swimming-pool.
A: What time do you serve breakfast?
B: We serve breakfast from 7 till 10 in the morning in the dinning-room.
A: May I have breakfast in room?
B: Yes, sir. You may fill out the breakfast order and place it on the door handle outside the room.
A: Thank you very much for your information. What is my room number?
B: It is 535. Here is your key. Have a pleasant stay!

Dialogue 2.
A: Good morning, madam! How can I help you?
B: Good morning. My name is Betty Brown. I'd like to have a double room with a bathroom and TV set. Can I get this room now?
A: Do you have a reservation in our hotel?
B: Unfortunately not. My husband and I decided to spend our weekend together somewhere out of town. And your hotel is conveniently located for us.
A: How many nights would you like to stay?
B: Just 2, Saturday and Sunday. What are your week-end rates for a double room for a night?
A: 70 dollars a night. And you may pay just now, if you wish.
B: May we pay when checking out?
A: Certainly, madam. just fill out the registration form and put down some general information about yourself - your name, nationality, your home address and telephone number. Here are your registration forms.
A: What is our room number?
B: It is 303. Here is your key. Enjoy your stay!
A: Thank you.

Dialogue 3.
A: Good morning! My name is Jenny Ross. I am from room 305.
B: Good morning, Mrs. Ross. How can I help you?
A: I checked in yesterday, at 9 o'clock. I was tired after a long trip and I went to bed immediately. But today, I got some problems with my room.
B: What problems, madam?
A: First of all, my TV- set doesn't work. I am interested in the latest financial and business news, that's why I need TV-set badly.
B: Oh, madam, I am awfully sorry! I'll send a repairman to your room at once. Any other problems?
A: Yes, one more problem. I paid for a mini-bar yesterday, but now I see, that it is not filled - no lemonade or some mineral water, no juice or appetitive. Can you see to it at once?
B: Yes, madam. It will take only 15 minutes, can you wait?
A: Certainly. Thank you very much.

Exercise 5. Прочтите диалоги еще раз и побеседуйте с партнером от имени дежурного администратора (receptionist).

Exercise 7. Представьте, что вы путешествуете с друзьями и решили остановиться в отеле, не имея брони. Побеседуйте с администратором (receptionist).

Exercise 8. Напишите сочинение о пребывании в отеле в России или за рубежом, используя материалы Unit 4.

Exercise 9. Напишите письмо-жалобу на обслуживание в отеле, используя слова и выражения из Unit 2, exercise 9: "Welcome to our hotel! You can have our service day and night. Dancing hall, 3 bars and cafes are of your disposal. Our rooms are comfortable and light. The prices for everything will surprise you."
