Unit 9. "I'd like to speak to ..."


Exercise 1.Повторите по грамматическому справочнику информацию о глаголах "to be", "to have", "would like", §1,3,4 и модальных глаголах §12, выучите слова и выражения и используйте их в собственных предложениях.

1. to call (ring) - звонить

2. to speak on the phone - говорить по телефону

3. to put through - соединять по телефону

4. to be in - быть в офисе

5. to be out - выйти, быть вне офиса

6. to be away - уехать

7. to reach somebody - дозвонится до кого либо

8. to be busy (engaged) - быть занятым

9. to hold on - быть на линии, не отпускать трубку

10. to leave the message - оставить сообщение

11. to contact somebody - связаться с кем-то

12. to trouble (bother) somebody - беспокоить кого-либо

13. to get the wrong number - неправильно набрать номер.

Exercise 2. Повторите по грамматическому справочнику информацию о модельных глаголах §12 и переведите предложения на русский язык.

In the 1970s a number of telecommunication companies introduced a very interesting idea. They suggested organizing telephone meetings or conferences by telephone. The form of the conference depends of the number of people participating in the conference and where they are located. When a number of people from different locations take part, a multiple or conference call is needed. When there is a group of people in one location, they can use a loud speaking telephone or a conference telephone with headsets.

The idea of telephone instead of personal meetings is very important today for multinational companies because they help save money and time. The disadvantages of such meetings are that you can neither see the participants nor demonstrate any visual materials. But you can overcome these drawbacks when you use a conference TV service.

A: Hello! Is it 5357282?
B: Yes, that's right. Who is calling, please?
A: Is it Agetha Murrey. I'd like to speak to Mr. Black. Is he in?
B: I am sorry, he is out at the moment. can I take a massage?
A: No, thank you very much. I'll call back later, in an hour. Is that all right?
B: Certainly, madam. I'll tell him you have called. He'll be in the office after 3 p.m.
A: Bye!
B: Bye-bye!

Dialogue 2.
A: 5732535
B: Hello! I am calling to Blake and Company. My name is Jack Smith, I'd like to speak to Mrs. Hanson. Is she in?
A: Yes, she is in. What is it about?
B: I'd like to discuss with her a one-day conference. She wanted to hold this conference in the business Center of our hotel. We are ready to discuss all the details, including time, prices, and equipment.
A: Just a moment, sir. I am putting you through. Mrs. Hanson, Mr. Smith is on the line. He is ready to discuss our one - day conference.
B: Thank you very much! Mrs. Hanson.

Dialogue 3.
A: Is that 5557375?
B: No, you've got the wrong number. It is 5557376.
A: Oh, I am sorry to have troubled you, I'll dial once again.

Exercise 5. Прочтите диалоги еще раз и побеседуйте со своим партнером от имени одного из участников бесед.

Exercise 6. Заполните пропущенные места в диалогах возможными ответами.

Exercise 7. Побеседуйте с секретарем в офисе по телефону: представьтесь, расскажите о цели своего звонка, узнайте, в офисе ли нужный вам человек.

Exercise 8. Напишите по-английски о своей самой интересной беседе по телефону, расскажите, кому вы звонили, когда, какова была цель звонка, как закончился разговор, что было интересного в этом разговоре.

Exercise 9. Напишите письмо главе компании с жалобой на работу секретаря, который был груб (rude) с вами.

Exercise 10. Задание для самостоятельной работы. Выберите из предложенных вариантов правильный и запишите его следующим образом: 1А или 3С.
